Dublin composer Roger Doyle has won the prestigious Magisterium Award at the Bourges international electro-acoustic music competition in France - the largest prize in the world for electronic music. The award is open to composers having at least 25 years of professional experience in the field, and its objective is 'the promotion and diffusion of works that might become milestones in the history of electroacoustic music'.

Aosdána member Doyle has worked extensively in theatre, film and dance and was seen recently onstage at the Gate theatre's revival of Oscar Wilde's Salome for which he wrote and performed the music. Babel, his magnum opus, was released on a 5-CD set in 1999 and last year the Dublin Electronic Arts Festival released a retrospective double CD of his 1980s work with Operating Theatre, the music-theatre company he co-founded with actress Olwen Fouere.

Of his prize-winning work 'The Ninth Set' Doyle says: 'To me the music has a supernatural feeling to it, but I have kept the title neutral, so that you can imagine what it is yourselves'.
