Nominations for the Laureate for Irish Fiction 2018–2021 were sought based on the published criteria with a closing date of July 7th 2017.
We invited nominations from:
- County Libraries (who may, in turn, invite nominations nations from branch libraries)
- library-affiliated book clubs (via the Library Association of Ireland)
- booksellers (via the Booksellers’ Association)
- Arts Council funded organisations with a literary interest
- a small number of senior poets and playwrights
- National Cultural Institutions
- local authority arts offices
- University Residency Partners

May–July 2017

Liaising with nominated writers
|
We received 68 submissions from bookshops, libraries, arts organisations, poets and playwrights. The Council wrote to all nominated writers, outlining key aspects of the honour and associated responsibilities, and asked writers to confirm whether or not they would accept the position if offered. Of the 26 writers nominated, 14 chose to put themselves forward for consideration.

Internal shortlisting
|
The shortlisting committee was composed of the Laureate project partners including; Orlaith McBride (Arts Council), James Ryan (UCD) and Deborah Landau (NYU) and was chaired by poet Paul Muldoon. The project partners were asked to use their expertise and knowledge to assess the nominees in line with the published criteria for the Laureate for Irish Fiction (available here). The criteria stipulates that the Laureate should possess the following qualities:
- A significant contribution to the field of literature in Ireland and internationally, one which has had a considerably positive impact on readers.
- A demonstrated commitment to engaging with the public, the media and the literary sector.
- An internationally recognised body of high quality literary writing.
Based on these criteria, the partners established a shortlist of 7 names.

Selection of Laureate for Irish Fiction
|
The final selection of the Laureate for Irish Fiction was made by an international selection panel based on the published criteria for selection. You can read more about the 2018–2021 Laureate International Selection Panel here.

Planning for Laureateship
|
The project partners and the selected Laureate met to outline the shape and priorities of the first six months of the Laureate’s term.
